Food was scarce in the winter. Many birds in the mountains survived on wild berries and grass seeds, and it was uncertain if desperation would drive them into the territory to search for food.

Additionally, the ant colony currently consisted of fifty-one Specialized Worker Ants and Soldier Ants, along with twenty-two voracious Worker Ant Larvae. These large individuals had a substantial demand for food.
