When Zhang Liang led the Northern Expeditionary Force to Yuguancheng, many of the female soldiers were quite young. They had recently joined the Zhenyuan Army and received very little training at the Daymangpo training camp before following Zhang Liang on a campaign to suppress bandits in Jin.

That experience was their only real combat experience. During the anti-bandit operations, experienced scouts were prioritized, with the Zhenyuan Army providing support.

Most of the female soldiers had never killed anyone before arriving at Yuguancheng. In times of war, whether or not someone has taken a life is an important measure of a soldier's experience.
