Shouts shattered the dawn's tranquility. The private army captain jumped up, not even bothering to dress, and flung open the window. He saw squads of "bandits" weaving through the darkness, quickly sealing the granary's doors and windows, while another squad headed straight for the day shift's barracks.
The day shift soldiers were also awakened by the shouts; several quick-reacting ones had already rushed to the door. But before they could even assess the situation in the courtyard, they were shot dead by the bandits' crossbows.
"Where the hell are these bandits? Are they really that good?" the captain exclaimed in disbelief. The bandits in the courtyard moved too quickly, their formation too disciplined, and their coordination too perfect.
