Bandits roamed the countryside, but the county government was relatively safer because so many high-ranking officials lived there. Since the start of the war, many people had tried to come to the county town every day, but they were all turned away by the county soldiers.

The bodyguards were a makeshift group, and the soldiers mistakenly identified them as refugees from the rural areas. They took a quick look at them and then leaned against the city walls to chat.

When the escorts saw the military soldiers, they assumed that the city gates would soon be opened. However, after waiting for nearly the time it takes for an incense stick to burn, the other side showed no intention of opening the gates. They could only shout towards the city walls, "Gentlemen, why aren't you opening the city gates?"
