Zuo Feifei, like Guan Xiaorou, was a victim of feudal superstition. She came from a well-educated family and was known throughout the region for her intelligence and talent in music, calligraphy, painting, and other arts.
Perhaps it was simply misfortune that struck; when she was fifteen years old, a red spot the size of a bean suddenly appeared below her left eye. According to the superstitious beliefs prevalent at the time, a black mole indicated good fortune, while a red mole or rash signified someone who used charms or seduction.
Guan Xiaorou suffered from sun allergies and mostly stayed indoors, spinning thread. This was not outwardly visible.
