After all, the moat could be blocked, and they could be rebuilt once the enemy retreated. During wartime, simple suspension bridges were used - those made of wooden planks suspended by ropes that could be raised and lowered.
They were lightweight but not very sturdy. The fighting was fierce, and eventually, the suspension bridge was destroyed.
