The boatmen stood up and took out a large coil of thick hemp rope from the baskets. The leader secured the rope to his back, grabbed it, and began climbing.

The other boatmen also detached their own ropes from the thinner cords and followed behind the leader.

As Zheng Fang had said, these men were rough and clumsy. During the climb, several of them slipped, but thankfully they always held onto the rope, otherwise they would have fallen into the rushing water.
