The Newcomen steam engine, adapted for use in mine carts, had its cylinder laid horizontally. The original tall rocker arm had been replaced with shorter connecting rods and a crankshaft.

The principle of operation was extremely simple: the boiler produced pressurized steam, which pushed the piston. After spraying cold water, atmospheric pressure pulled it back.
