Shortly after, the Turkish fleet discovered six Russian battleships patrolling outside the harbor. He sent urgent requests for reinforcements, but these pleas went unanswered.
These Russian battleships had sailed from Sevastopol, over a hundred miles away, and were part of the Russian Black Sea Fleet, commanded by Vice Admiral Pavel Stepanovich Nakhimov.
