She had little formal education and was often bullied in the village. As she grew up, no one dared to marry her because she was the daughter of a landlord.

When she was twenty-four, a matchmaker introduced her to an old and ugly man from the mountains who was willing to offer two bags of rice and a bag of cornmeal as a betrothal gift.

At the time, her parents firmly disagreed and even chased the matchmaker away, saying that even if they starved to death, they could not exchange their daughter for food.
